Peace initiatives call to action on the anniversary of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine

16 peace organizations invite to participate in manifold peaceful protests on the weekend 24-26 Feb for an end of the spiralling violence, in favour of a truce and peace negotiations, against the war of aggression of Russia in the Ukraine, as well as against the riarmament program of the German government. In many cities activities against the ongoing war will take place, for example in Berlin, Bonn, Frankfurt and Stuttgart.

„Stop the killing in the Ukraine – for a ceasefire and negotiations“, reads the headline of the appeal (complete also in German, Ukrainian, Russian und Italian at www.stoppt-das-toeten.de). „We condemn Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which violates international law and has led to hundreds of thousands of dead and injured people and millions of refugees since February 24, 2022” starts the text of the appeal.

„We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. We recognize their right to self-defense. We stand with those who want to break the logic of war, for example through civil resistance, non-violent action, desertion or conscientious objection. All people who want to escape war must find protection through humanitarian visas and asylum”, continues the appeal.

The coalition of civil society organizations demands diplomatic initiatives from the German Government, the EU, the UN and the OSCE in order to reach a ceasefire and peace negotiations with all relevant actors, as well as the withdrawl of the Russian military forces from the Ukraine. The further escalation, including the spector of a nuclear exchange, must be prevented. Instead, the UN Anti-Nuclear Weapons Treaty must be signed by all nuclear powers.

„War means death, violence, seeking refuge, rape and torture for those directly affected. It also means food shortages, hunger and poverty for those indirectly affected, especially in the Global South. Increased arms spending, military „special assets,“ threats and further escalation must not be the answer“, reads the common appeal.
