Imprisoned Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan made a historic call on Thursdayfor members of his outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) to lay down their weapons and end more than four decades of conflict with the Turkish state.
Al-Monitor’s Amberin Zaman broke the news of the renewed peace talks between the PKK and Turkey in October of last year as the Turkish government was motivated to “prevent another Syria,” a source told her. Still, numerous challenges to a full peace process remain.
